Janice JacksonHello, my name is Janice Jackson, Project Director of Women Embracing Abilities Now (W.E.A.N.). W.E.A.N. is a mentoring program which creates partnerships between women with new disabilities, and women who live successfully with their disabilities in the community.

Many women who receive a disability have a desperate need for someone who can help them cope with personal issues that come with living as a woman with a disability. Some of these issues include self esteem, self worth, sexuality, mothering skills, and personal appearances. Outside of a very short rehabilitation experience, there is very little help available in the community. These women are going home depressed, and feeling less than women. These women need support and encouragement in personal re-development and societal interaction to help shed the devalued status that has been placed on this special group of women.

The mission of W.E.A.N. is to provide a support system for women with new disabilities. It will also help to wean women with new disabilities from having their limitations be their focal point, and to start living in their abilities. W.E.A.N. will empower and enable women with new disabilities to become productive by creating one-on-one mentoring relationships, and by inviting them into a positive and dynamic sisterhood.

W.E.A.N. is currently recruiting women to become mentors. If you meet the following qualifications, and would like to be a part of a wonderful sisterhood, W.E.A.N. would like to hear from you:

IF YOU ARE A:
Woman 18 years of age and older
Woman who has become physically challenged as an adult
Woman who has accepted her disability
Woman who has a positive attitude
Woman who is successful in her new life
Woman who wants to help and giveback
