James Sturdivant

Born and raised in Baltimore, James dedicated his life to helping people with disabilities. He began his work at the MS Society, and MCIL was fortunate enough to hire him in the early 1990's. At MCIL he functioned as a Disability Advocate. In what became his last job, James specialized in getting non-elderly people out of nursing homes. He truly believed in people having choice in their lives and being able to live independently in the community. James helped many people learn how to be able to help themselves. He understood that all people - regardless of disability, race, creed, gender, or national origin - should have equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of life. His belief in the civil rights of all people made him a person who could transcend the artificial barriers society creates. He was a man of peace and, through his work to help others achieve a better life, he became a prince among men.

In his honor, MCIL has created a Memorial Fund to support our goal of helping people with disabilities transition from nursing homes into the community. All profits from the sale of Universal Design Jewelry will be used for transition costs to help return someone home.
